In the first day or two it's normal for a new tattoo to look swollen, feel warm, and weep a bit of fluid. That's your body doing exactly what it should — releasing plasma to start forming a protective layer over the wound. It washes away easily once the bandage comes off; it isn't a sign anything's wrong.
Not every tattoo goes through a visible flaking stage, but many do — old skin sheds away to reveal the fresh skin underneath, which can feel tight or look a little shiny for a while. This usually plays out over a couple of weeks, though the deeper healing keeps going even after the surface looks settled.
How long full healing takes varies a lot from person to person — general health, occupation, allergies, and age all play a part. Everyone's skin responds a little differently, so it's worth paying attention to how yours specifically is healing rather than expecting it to match someone else's timeline exactly.
