Stages of Tattoo Healing

Stage 1 – The Oozing Phase

During this initial stage, commonly referred to as the oozing phase, your tattoo may appear swollen, red, and may leak fluid. Don’t be alarmed, as this is a natural part of the healing process. Plasma is released as your body’s way of forming a protective scab over the tattooed area, utilizing its clotting properties. The nutrients present in this plasma aid in the healing process.

Stage 2 – The Flaking Stage

Not all tattoos progress to this stage, but for those that do, it involves the shedding of dead skin, revealing fresh, new skin underneath. This newly revealed skin may feel tight and appear shiny. This phase can persist for a couple of weeks. Despite the appearance of complete healing, it’s important to note that the skin is still undergoing the healing process beneath the surface.

Stage 3 – The Healed Stage

Although termed the healed stage, the duration of time it takes for a tattoo to fully heal varies greatly from person to person. Numerous factors such as individual health, occupation, allergies, age, and more, can influence the overall healing process of your tattoo. Each individual has a unique combination of factors that impact their healing journey.

It’s crucial to recognize that everyone’s skin and body react differently to tattooing. Therefore, it’s essential to educate yourself on the process and be mindful of what feels right or wrong during the healing period of your tattoo. While I’ve shared a helpful video on the subject, remember that I’m not the ultimate authority.
